Welcome to the home of stories aching to be told. Our selections screen at the Regent Theatre, a 103-year-old Vaudeville gem in Arlington, MA (Boston), and our winners get showcased to cinema buyers at the Cannes Film Festival.

We are also building a "Traveling Film Festival," which will screen in a minimum of four North American cities in 2020. Certain films may be invited to play our Traveling Film Festival, but they are under no obligation to do so. Additionally, those who do play our Traveling Film Festival will share in a "Filmmakers Profit Pool."

With 36 five-star reviews in our first year, we launched deep into FilmFreeway's "Top 100 Best Reviewed Festivals." Our second festival, which runs this October 11-13, welcomes 64 films/docs/shorts/music videos, 77 screenplays, and four songs from 18 countries.

Our mission is to make the world a better place, but we can't achieve that if you don't share your work with us, so please submit today!

Our sponsors include 5A Studios, Final Draft, The Regent Theatre, Lonely Seal Releasing, Page Craft, Hourglass24, Nadeau Media, and InkTip.

The South Carolina Underground Film Festival celebrates all genres of independent film in one festival. Taking place in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina, SCUFF is truly an international film festival as we are seeking films from all over the globe. The SCUFF will be two packed days of indie films where fans and filmmakers can meet and mingle and celebrate obscure and independent film.

Besides promoting and showcasing the best in truly independent cinema from all around the globe, the SCUFF also promotes local filmmaking in SC. We will shine a special spotlight on SC produced films and filmmakers. Filmmakers will have an opportunity to have their works screened for a captive audience while competing for awards in many categories.

From the novice to the professional, from the student to the experimental filmmaker, SCUFF is seeking all type of films that may not be able to find an audience in more mainstream film festivals.

Drama, comedy, horror, sci-fi, action, animation, music videos, fake trailers, puppet shows, claymation, documentary, LGBT, and so on. If you can create it, we want to see it. The more obscure the better!

Do you have to ask yourself if your film is too much for our festival? If so then we definitely want to see it! Does your film push social boundaries? Would Sundance or any mainstream festival laugh at you thinking you had a chance to get into their festival? Then we want your movie!

Q&A’s will follow screening with visiting filmmakers and actors. The festival will end on the second night with a big awards ceremony as we give out the SCUFF awards! Follow us on Facebook and we continue to make announcements until the festival arrives! Good luck and we can’t wait to see what you made!

The SCUFF wants to promote and nurture independent films and filmmakers. We want to expose to the world a whole new segment of cinema that they would never see anywhere else. Because of this our film festival is FREE to the public! We hope this will bring out lots of people to all the screenings and create a fun and festive environment for not only the attendees but also visiting filmmakers.

Awards & Prizes

SCUFFY Awards will be given out in many categories. Our new SCUFFY awards were designed and sculpted by special effects artist Tony Rosen who is most famous for creating the Annabelle doll used in the films "The Conjuring" and "Annabelle". We also give our winners our famous miners helmets too! Official Sponsor Final Draft scriptwriting software will present software to the winners of the best unproduced screenplay categories. Unproduced screenplay categories will also receive free listings on InkTip. Producers have made more than 200 films from scripts and writers they found through InkTip.

ABOUT:
Better Cities Film Festival collects, curates and presents the very best films on the theme of making better cities, towns, and neighborhoods.

We honor the top films and filmmakers with awards. (And applause!) And we screen those films to a vast audience around the world through our flagship event (a four-day film festival), and through satellite screening events in a growing number of host cities.

Better Cities Film Festival was originally founded by Joshua Paget in 2013 as the New Urbanism Film Festival. Discussions and decisions about urban planning and design are too often limited to the university classroom or city council chambers. The festival was launched with a vision to move that conversation onto the silver screen and into the streets, engaging the broader community in the vital work of placemaking and neighborhood revitalization.

During its five-year run in Los Angeles, the festival received over 700 submissions from all over the world, and screened over 200 films, pairing them with experts who helped lead post-film discussions about the local built environment.

In its second year, by popular demand, the festival took an unexpected turn: community groups and organizations wanted to use the power of film to help revitalize and improve their hometowns. It was time to “take the show on the road.” We instituted a way for other cities and towns to host local screenings. In some cases, they wanted to screen the “best of the fest” – a reel of the top award-winning festival films. In other cases, by special request, we dug through our vast archives and curated custom playlists of films especially relevant to the current issues facing a particular host city.

By 2018, the festival had enjoyed a five-year run in Los Angeles, and sold-out screenings in over 30 cities around the world, ranging from international hotspots like Shen Zhen and Milan, to smaller domestic cities and towns like Laredo and Oxnard.

In 2019, First+Main Films acquired the the New Urbanism Film Festival, with the goal of expanding it to more cities and more audiences. Founder Josh Paget remains as the festival director and driving creative force. Together we’ve rechristened it Better Cities Film Festival.
